Life is great opportunity for us ကႝပ္ - ၆

Life is not only a birth, a living and a death; it is an opportunity as well. When you have a life, you have an opportunity to do what you want to
do and to be what you want to be, but you should know what should be done and what should be avoided. What you should do is more important than what you want to do. Life is to practise what is good and to refrain from what is evil. To practise what is good means to do the right things such as: doing public services and public responsibilities, helping those who need your helps and doing for the social welfares and so on. These are golden chances for you while you live. Don't miss them.

To refrain from what is bad means to avoid doing the wrong things such as; Thefts, robberies, kidnapping and murders, etc. Doing good things bring you happiness. Peace and harmony. In contrast, doing bad things give you pain and suffering. Think twice before something wrong is done. We have a question of why there are heaven and hell and of who create them. In a Buddhist sense, we truely see that no God creates our own heaven and hell.We ourselves create them. We are the creaters of our own heaven and hell and the masters of our own fates. Eighter you like heaven or you like hell. Life gives you a chance to choose it.

Life is a duty to fullfil in the places which are badly in needs of everything a duty to lift up human morals and also a duty to do noble deeds: doing for one' own welfare as well as for the other' welfare. Buddha himself performed the three noble duties; there are:1 Doing for the world (Lokattha cariya), 2 Doing for relatives and nation (Nyatatthacariya), 3 Doing for himelf (Buddhatthacariya) in the Buddha Numerous Past lives, He never used the world for himself; he always used himself for the world. This is a good example to the world`s citizens. The great things and dedicate their lives in the great works. Remember that we have two hands, two eyes and two ears, it is better to use one for ourselves and share the another with others.

Let our hearts and minds be a home for kindness, compassion and love; don't let them be a house for anger, greed, selfishness and illusion. Anger, greed and illusion blind us in order not to see the truth. War, terrorism, discrimination, misunderstanding and hatred are being brought into our world because of our anger, greed, selfishness and delusion. A mind without a wisdom and a heart without a compassion are just like a garden full of weeds without flowers. To live a life meaningfully and beautifully, we need wisdom, compassion, love in kindness just like fish to water and roses to rain.

Think carefully that how many lives, cities and centuries have been destroyed and ruined, but our anger, greed, selfishness and hatred can never be lessened. Instead they become bigger and bigger. It is true that we can not escape from death, aging and ailment but we can get free from anger, greed and illusion if we practise enough. If our anger, greed, selfishness and delusion can be driven away. War terrorism and discrimination will be automatically disappeared. At that time, our world would be bloomed with justice, peace and equality.

If we know what the essence of life is, we can gain and benefit a lot from it. If we live our lives carelessly without a deep thinking, we have nothing, we will lose it. Death is not the greatest loss in life; the greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. Don't let wisdom, compassion and love die inside us, let them flower in our hearts and minds. Life give us a golden opportunity to meet, love and help one another. We are not to hate, despise and oppress one another. To be in harmony with our neighbors and society, our action, words and thoughts should be adapted to them. Always keep in mind that "we can not change the direction of the wind but we can adjust our sails".

In order not hurt others, we must be careful of what we say and do. Words should be soft and gentle. The Japanese proverb says that "a kind word can warm the three months winter." My saying goes that "your kind smile can keep my heart warm for seven days and seven years". Action should be righteous. Those who are worthy of respect should be respected and the people who are worthy of honour should be honoured; these are blessings. If we live in law and order (the Dhamma), the law (the Dhamma) rules and protects us. You don't have to worry about being hated, criticized and gossiped. What is important is that you must try to be kind to people and accept them and love them. Always bear in mind that "Love begets love" and "kindness begets kindness". You will be reciprocated.

Sometimes you have to lose and fail, sometimes life doesn't happen as you expect. Anyway don't give up your goal, never turn back half way. Remember that we can not see the stars without the darkness. "Failure is only the another opportunity to try again more intelligently and more carefully". "Don't see a glass of water as a half empty, see it as a half full", by seeing so, you will be inspired and encouraged. You need strength and courage to achieve your goal. You also need a patience to be able to over come all the hardships, obstacles and hindrances on the way you go.

"Patience is a bitter plant but it produces sweet fruits". It is completely 100% important in every action. Patience is a key to success. Patience, symphaty, forgiveness and understanding bring us the atmosphere of peace in our society. Rain falls on all the field, but crops, fruits and flowers blossom only in the soils where the seeds are sown. If we want to have peace, justice and equality everywhere on our earth, the seeds of love and compassion, the seeds of forgiveness and understanding should be planted in the hearts and minds of every universal citizen.

Life is too precious, value it. Human life is very rare and difficult to obtain. Therefore cherish your life. Don't spend your life meaning lessly and foolishly. As life give us happiness, peace and rapture, It can give us pain and suffering as well. If we don't know how to live, life is full of sadness and sorrow. Because of our anger, selfishness and hatred, our friends turned to our enemies white turned to black and nectar turned to poison and vice versa. We are all born here on this world only for a short visit. Don't forget to practise noble deeds which can create heaven on our earth. Don't worry and don't hurry, remember to smell the flowers on the way we walk. Life is a great opportunity for us, let's benefit from it.

May love and peace prevail all over the world!

The History of King MaNuHor And Lives of servitude in PaGan ကႝပ္ - ရ

King MaNuHor is one of the most powerful kings in the Mon dynasty and also one of the most devout Buddhist kings in history. Therefore, we, all our Mon people, should not forget him and his history. He ruled over the Mon kingdom of Suvannabhumi, meaning a land of gold (Modern ThaTon) in the 57th of Mon dynasty in the 11th century A.D. During his reign, there was a huge war occurred between Thaton and Pagan. The distance between these two kingdoms is about 450 miles.

I just want to outline king Manuhor’s history not in details, so please do not expect too much to hear from my writing. He was born in the year 1002 A.D. (Myanmar era in the year 364). He was Suriyakumâ by name (mentioned in the Kalayani inscription ) Maim Manuhor (in the Mon chronicle) but he was known under the title of Manuhor. He was a single son in the Royal family who deserved to ascend to the throne and who was worthy enough of Royal properties and possessions. His father was king Udinnarâjâ and his mother, queen Ratana Mâlâdevi who righteously and wisely ruled the Mon kingdom of Suvannabhumi with the ten noble rules of the king in the 56th dynasty. They had an only child, Maim Manuhor. Suvannabhumi was peaceful, stable and prosperous under his father’s rule.

It is said that His majesty king Manuhor was very handsome, charming and good looking at his young age. He had long black mustache on his upper lip. When the time came for a noble wedding, he married to princess namely called Mangalâdevi, the daughter of a high Royal official. At the age of 28, he came to the throne and became a king of the 57th dynasty in the Thaton kingdom after the death of his father, king Udinnarâja. He had power, dignity, prestige and a super natural tongue (a miracle tongue) like king Râjâdhiraj. When he spoke, his tongue radiated light (sent out the light) People were afraid of him and respected him. He owned the 31 white elephants and the Royal army forces such as: the forces of elephants, of horses and of sea and so on. He had the different kinds of weapons to protect the country and the people. King Manuhor together with his Aggamahesi queen Mangalâdevi ruled the kingdom of the Thaton peacefully.

The kingdom was defended with four city walls and two moats. There were some guardians who watched the door of the city and the quay and there were also many guards in the east, in the west, in the south and in the north. All around the city was guarded by a hundred thousand soldiers. The Royal military forces were firmly and strongly deployed everywhere in the country. The king with his Royal warriors risked their lives to protect the mother land. No enemy and no king from the other countries dared come to fight. If they had come to fight, they would have been just defeated and killed by two super warriors. King Manuhor ruled the country for 26 years. Suvannabhumi was flourished, prosperous and peaceful just like heaven above. This is how he was skillful and careful in his administration and strategy.

However the evil things happened when misfortune fell on Suvannabhumi. When a bad luck fall on us, things don’t go the way we want and the way we expect. Before the fall of Suvannabhumi (modern Thaton), there were the six bad omens which signed the king and people that something evil would happen to the country. The 6 bad omens that mentioned in the Kalayani inscription are (1) robberies and thefts taken place in the kingdom (2) diseases such as: snake poison which damaged the people’s skin and cholera, etc. (3) people were lack of food, starving and dying of hunger (4) the seven armies from the seven countries came to fight (5) Monks declined in maintaining Sâsanâ, Pariyatti (The doctrinal) Patipatti (The practical) (6) King Manuhor himself neglected in the work of supporting and promotion of Sâsanâ (mission).

The root cause of why Suvannabhumi was under the rule of king AnawraHtâ was that the daughter of king AnawraHtâ called Anangalar sent out to Thaton and was given to king Manuhor as a princess. She was told to destroy the three miracle powers of the king. They are (1) to kill the two super warriors, the two brothers namely Paratdhot and Paratjanook (2) to cut off the egg plant shaped drum which used for a warning (3) to break the moral of the king she committed adultery. At first she was not accepted and she was tested whether she was the real daughter of king AnawraHtâ or not. The king used his wise tactic to refuse her. The king brought the seeds of the soaked mangoes which had been soaked in salt liquid and the seeds of the boiled toddy palm and told Anangalar, the daughter of AnawraHtâ that if she could plant these seeds and could make them grow and bear fruits, he would accept her as his aggamahesi, the chief queen. If not, she had to receive the punishment.

Anangalar agreed with the king and she made a vow and planted the seeds (dead seeds not raw ones) in front of king Manuhor. It was a miracle that the seeds grew taller and taller and bore flowers and fruits in due course. Therefore the king had no choice and had to accept her as his queen as he promised. When misfortune fell on the plight of Thaton, anything could happen. It happened not the way king Manuhor expected. It didn’t happen as he wanted. I think that it is a good lesson for us to learn from the mistake.

It was wrong of king Manuhor that he received the cheating hearted Anangalar as his queen without deep thinking and consulting with astrologers and Royal wise men. It was also wrong that he gave many favors to her to spoil the three miracle powers mentioned above. But she failed to kill the two skilled warriors, the two brothers. When the elder brother, Paratjanook, realized that his king wanted to kill him, he agreed with Anangalar and accepted being killed. He told that his bone should be buried at the south of the city to protect the country. Despite being killed on the trick, he still worried about his king and people. This show that how he loved his country and king. After having succeeded on her plan, Anangalar sent message to her father, king AnawraHtâ to come to fight Suvannabhumi.

When the two brothers were alive, the Pagan army came to fight about three times but failed to manage. After the elder brother, Paratjanook died, the Pagan army came again to attack Thaton with great forces during raing season, Myanmar era in the year 419, but they still failed. They wanted to know why they could not manage the fight and went to see the astrologers. It was calculated that the buried bone of the elder brother, Paratjanook at the south of the city had to be removed away mean while the younger brother, Paratdhot went to the Pagan side because he felt painful on the death of his brother. In the end nothing left on Suvannabhumi, a land of gold.

In the 11th century A.D, Buddha era 1601, the world era 1050 and the Myanmar era in the year 419, the 1st waxing of Jure (June) on Monday in the morning, the Mon kingdom of Suvannabhumi downed under the rule of the Pagan king, AnawraHtâ. Many objects of art, of culture, all the Royal family, the noble men, the skilled craftsmen, the Buddha’s relics and the three Pitakas (three baskets) about 30 pairs of Pitakas were carried off to Pagan.

King Manuhor and his queen were chained. Some 33 white elephants and tens of thousands of monks were captured and they were driven to Pagan on foot.

It was a long walk journey about 350 miles far from Thaton to Pagan. We can imagine how much they suffered and how harder they had to walk. King Manuhor and queen Mangalâdevi were sentenced in prison to all the rest of their lives. We can draw a picture that how hander our king and ancient Mons had been harassed under the rule of Pagan king, AnawraHtâ. Lives of slavery are good for nothing but hard as hell.

Sometimes the Myanmar king, AnawraHtâ had to consult with king Manuhor, the Mon king for good advices. King AnawraHtâ was still afraid of king Manuhor when he spoke due to his miracle tongue. Later the miracle on his tongue disappeared because he ate evil rice mixed with lime and turmeric that given to him by the Myanmar king, AnawraHtâ under his trick. After having lost his miracle tongue, king Manuhor felt really disappointed and hopeless. Therefore, he requested the Pagan king to let him build pagodas and statues of Buddha. King, AnawraHtâ agreed with him and gave him an opportunity for the religious construction.

He sold his magic diamond to a wealthy man of Anuradha city and earned 6 cartloads of silver. All the money was donated in the construction. He erected a pagoda, the three statues of Buddha and a reclining statue of Buddha. They were all set up by the skilled Mon architects and Mon craftsmen. The pagoda, the three statues of Buddha and the reclining Buddha were built on the very crowded and tight position from one to the other. It is very narrow and very difficult to go through from one to one for paying homage. The Mon architects wanted to show that how harder and restricted our king had been sentenced and controlled in prison. It took 6 months and 6 days to complete the construction. It was started from the 2nd waxing of Khadhoisoi(August) and completed on 6th waxing of Phoragon(March).

After he had his religious project completed, he prayed, “In my every life of rebirth, may I have no one who conquer me.” At the time of the fall of Thaton, King Manuhor aged 55 and had ruled over the Mon kingdom of Thaton for 26 years and was imprisoned for 10 years in Pagan region. His life ended with sadness and sorrow.

Venerable ArahamH promoted Sâsanâ(mission) for 44 years in his mother Land, the Mon kingdom of Thaton and for 17 years in the Pagan kingdom. The Buddha era 1616, the Myanmar era in the year 436, he aged 81 and got 61 Buddhist lents and attained nirvana at the Jetavana monastery in Pagan region.

May we all be liberated and free from the lives of slaves.

The amazing History of Mi Ta La Htaw, a Mon heroine ကႝပ္ - ၈

History is the blood of Nation; a nation without a history can not stand like a man without blood can not be alive. Therefore, a history should not be forgotten by its people and it should be remembered all the time. Knowing histories let us realize who we are, where we come from and what a nation is. I don’t think it is wrong to say that histories are as important as our blood just like water to fish.

This time I want to mention about Mi Ta La Htaw’s amazing story. Her story had been already written and mentioned in some history books. You may have read and heard about her. She is one of the bravest and the most pious Mon maiden in Buddhism. Although she had passed away for a long time, her braveness, glory and name are still living in history. She should be remembered and honoured by Mon of nowadays as well as Mon in the future, our next generations. This is the main purpose to write and tell her story again in the future of Mon magazine.

Her maiden name was Bhadradevi. Now she is well-known and being called as Mi Ta La Htaw. At the time of her life was the time when king Tissa ruled the land of Pegu (Hongsarwatoi) A.D in the years 1043-57. He was a heretic king of Pegu. He made no obeisance to Buddha and never listened to the Dhamma (The Law). He honoured and worshiped the Brahmans. He threw down the images of Buddha into Ditches and marshes.

At that time, Mi Ta La Htaw was a certain merchant’s daughter who believed in the true religion. She was a village maiden. Since she was ten years old. (from her tenth year up) she went out with her parents to listen to Dhamma (The Law). She continually heard the Dhamma talks. She had exceeding great joy in the three gems. Everyday she recited the three names of refuge carefully. The time when she was in her first youth was the time when the king cast down the images of Buddha. At that time, she went down to bathe. By chance she thrust her hand against an image of Buddha.and then she drew it up. It glistened with gold. She asked her old slave women who had cased the image to be cast away. They answered her that the king followed the words of false teachers. Verily he was the one who caused the images of Buddha to be cast away.

“Whoever greets and honours or bows before Buddha at the Pagodas, the king will kill him or her” Thus said the slave women. When she heard their words, she said bravely like this, “I obey the three gems and I can endure death. At first wash the image clean and set them up at a pagoda.” she herself and her slave women washed it and set it up at a pagoda. As she was setting up the image, these things were told to the king. And then the king sent his men to call her. She said to the king’s men, “let me abide here before the image”. After saying that, she made haste to wash every image of Buddha as many as she found there and set every one of them up. After a time, the king sent more men. When the maiden, Mi Ta La Htaw, came before the king , she told him what she had done. But he listened to her with anger and commanded his men to take her to the elephant which might trample her to death. And then she did something gentle to soften the king, the elephants and the elephant-men and she continually said,” I take refuge in the lord” and she called on the three names of refuge(Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha ). The elephant dared not tread on her but he roared with his voice. The elephant- men could not make him run at her. Many many times they brought other elephants, but no elephant dared not tread on her.

So the king’s men told the king in fear. When the king heard these things; he told his men to cover her with straw for the funeral pyre. But the maiden caused gentleness to work again and she called on the three names of refuge. The king’s men stirred themselves to burn her, yet she wasn’t burned. Therefore, they were in fear and told the king about her amazing and extra ordinary powers which she gain from the triple gems. Thus said the king “ Bring her here .” They brought her to the king and he said, “O maiden! When I see the image of Buddha, your teacher, can fly up into heaven, then I let you live. But if there are about seven images or eight images of Buddha can not fly up, I will have you cut into seven pieces”.

And he had her led to the foot of the ditch and she prayed on like this, “O image of the lord of bliss! I, your hand maiden, set up your images. Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha are lord everywhere. As the three gems are lord everywhere, so may eight images of Buddha fly up into the king’ s hall’’ in the twinkling of an eye, there flew eight images up in to heaven and flew towards the king’ s hall. The maiden, Mi Ta La Htaw, returned and pointed them out to the king. The king and his many men saw the images of Buddha flying up, it was a wander far and wide.

Then said the maiden, “O earthly King ! Buddha, my teacher, is gone to nirvana. You have been able to see only his images fly up into heaven in his stead. You have followed false teachers and called them better. Let your people see them fly up.” Then the king commanded his teachers to fly. But the wrong teachers could not fly, not even one foot height. And the king drove them away and he caused the maiden, Mi Ta La Htaw, to bathe and he raised her to be his chief queen. The king returned thanks and followed the true religion, Buddhism ever after.

According to Mi Ta La Htaw’s history, one who has a strong will and a strong confidence in the triple gems is safe; no one can harm him or her. If you practise Dhamma (The law) Dhamma protects you back. After reading This true life of Mi Ta la Htaw, I hope every one of you (our readers) can be inspired and can have more devout and piety in Buddhism. With the helps and the powers of the triple gems, Mi Ta la Htaw had ability and a power to be able to convert the king into Buddhism. If you practise Buddhism enough like Mi Ta La Htaw, you are safe and secure everywhere you go.
